The Good German and Superman II: Human Beings Selling Out

In The Good German, we find out that Cate Blanchett’s character, a Jew, was able to avoid the expected demise of Jews in Nazi Germany by finding twelve other Jews and turning them over to the Gestapo. She did so “to survive.”

Martin Niemöller, etc.

In Superman II, Lex Luthor conspires with General Zod for financial gain and real estate (Australia, and in the Donner cut, Cuba). In watching the Donner cut on AMC last Thursday, I was struck by how the citizens of Metropolis attempt (feeble though it was) to stand up to the three super-villains. I think many more people would kick it Lex Luthor style.

Kent Brockman, etc.
